I bought two of these. Not only does the one work amazingly well in the bird bath, but the other one I put on a pot of dirt, scatter dirt and small gravel over it, and that heater got even more action than the heated bird bath. And that is saying a lot since I am in Northern Wisconsin and we get sixty below zero nights in the winter. Birds would not only eat the gravel and the small pile of sunflower seeds, but would sit on the heated dirt and enjoy the warmth and because the container had an inch lip around, it kept a bit of the wind off the birds too.I highly recommend to any serious bird watcher, that if you are going to heat water, you might want to consider buying two and heat a dirt bath too.
This product works very well. It is inexpensive, the birds & wildlife seem to love it. This is a much cheaper alternative to the heated birdbaths. I would definately buy it again.
I have had this for about a month. Wouldn't you know as soon as we got it the weather warmed up and haven't had to use it much. So far it seems to be working. As the title suggests, this is a no-frills de-icer but does the job. I place a small rock on it to keep it in place. It keeps the bird's fannies warm so they are happy so we are happy.
This de=icer works GREAT. Would buy it again. Using a saucer from a large flower pot works great because it is shallow and if there is to much water on top of the de-icer anything over 3 inches will freeze.
It is effective to about 0 degrees F. One for a friend for Christmas, and one more for ourselves. We purchased two of the Bird Bath De-Icers recently. Then the edges of the water start to freeze. We have had one in use for the past year (this is the second winter). We are happy with it's performance, and the birds appreciate liquid water when the temperature gets way below freezing. I have to weight it down with a rock to keep it in place. We bought a replacement because this one is getting dark spots, probably algae, in the indentations that is hard to clean off.
